In the United States, the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, commonly known as the Triple Crown, is a title awarded to a three-year-old Thoroughbred horse who wins the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes.

The Preakness Stakes, the second “jewel” in the Triple Crown, is traditionally held on the third Saturday in May each year at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. This year’s race marks the 146th running of the race. The Black-Eyed Susan has been the state flower Maryland since 1918.

Each Triple Crown race has its own official drink, a refreshing cocktail that anyone can make at home.  Throughout the afternoon, Mixologist Keenon James {IG: @KeenOnCocktails} will demonstrate the mixology of all three official cocktails.

Keenon has been creating craft cocktails for nearly twenty years. Starting behind the bar part-time to make some money during his college days, Keenon has continued to hone his cocktail mixing skills and now teaches others the art of making (and enjoying) a great cocktail !

Mr. James is a Connecting Link of the Prince George’s County (MD) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated.

Cocktails

The iconic Mint Julep is the traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby race, which has helped propel the cocktail's popularity. Tens of thousands of Mint Juleps are served at Churchill Downs in Louisville each year.

The official drink of the Preakness Stakes, the Black-eyed Susan is named after the Maryland state flower and first created in 1973.

The Belmont Cocktail is the official drink for the Belmont Stakes. Though it hasn't always been the cocktail of choice for the June race, it’s an easy recipe to transform into a punch and serve by the pitcher to a thirsty crowd.
