A second-generation African Methodist Episcopal Church preacher, Mom Maria Mallory White—known in the church as “Rev. Maria”—is from the three-time Five-Star greater than great Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter.

A graduate of the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, where she earned Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees, Mom Maria is the author of From Diva to Disciple: Sermons for Sistahs. Her preaching and ministry to women have taken her into pulpits across the nation and overseas. She has shared the Good News of Jesus Christ with congregations large and small, annual conferences and at women’s conferences, workshops and retreats, as well as live on The Word Network as a featured preacher on “The Empowerment Encounter with Dr. Jamal Bryant.”

Through creative, insightful and anointed preaching and teaching, Mom Maria has focused her passion in ministry on spiritual formation, discipleship training and ministry to women. Along the way, the LORD has used her to touch, teach and transform countless sistahs seeking first the Kingdom of God.

Mom Maria worked as a national journalist prior to receiving God’s call to ministry. A graduate of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, she began her writing career with Business Week and subsequently joined U.S. News & World Report, where she became the first African American to ascend to the level of editorial management at this national newsweekly.

As a professional journalist and freelance contributor, Mom Maria also has served as a staff writer for the Sun Sentinel newspaper in South Florida, The Baltimore Sun and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Her work has appeared also in numerous outlets, including Black Enterprise, Gospel Today and The Christian Century, and Mom Maria served as executive editor of The African American Pulpit, the preeminent journal on Black preaching.

Since moving to Florida in 2002, Mom Maria also has worked as a professor of religion at Broward College and as a professor of journalism at Florida A & M University, as well as adviser for The Famuan, the university’s award-winning newspaper.

A member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Mom Maria and her husband, the Reverend John F. White II, are the founders and servant leaders of Immanuel Temple, a Kingdom Movement and ministry of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. They are the grateful parents of two Jacks: John F. White III, “Trey,” and Joseph Christian White, “Joey.”
