Alice Leigh Peoples was the 20th National President of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated an organization serving over 9,000 mothers and 30,000 family members in more than 230 chapters across the United States. She was an active member from 1986 – 2013 and is now a lifetime associate member. She joined as a charter member of the Ypsilanti, Chapter. The organization was founded in 1938 in Philadelphia.
Mrs. Peoples is the wife of Gregory A. Peoples and the mother of 4 children, Allaina, Ashleigh, Angela, and Gregory Matthew. She is grandmother to Ava, Robert, and Noir. She has been an active community and school volunteer and is particularly committed to the health and welfare of children. She has been a resident of Ypsilanti since in 1978.
She was elected national president of Jack and Jill of America in July 2004 at the organization’s Kansas City National Convention. She became national president after serving as National Vice President for two years. During her tenure as national president, she was selected as one of the 100 most influential African-Americans by Ebony Magazine. She also served as the Mid-Western Region Foundation Member-at-Large from 1997 – 2001 representing her region on the Board of Trustees of the Jack and Jill of America Foundation.
Mrs. Peoples has remained supportive of the aims of Jack and Jill after her active tenure ended. She has conducted numerous training workshops and guided several chapters in the Mid-Western Region through the chapter development process. She supported National Vice President Tanya Hand as Dean of 5 provisional groups across the nation in preparing for the 2020 National Convention. She has also worked with several Ypsilanti Chapter teens preparing them for the regional oratorical competition. She completed her active membership in June 2013 after 27 years of service.
Mrs. Peoples is a native of Dayton, Ohio, graduated from high school in Columbus, Ohio and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Relations/Business Administration from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio where she met her husband.
Her professional career has been primarily in engineering and technology fields as a writer, trainer, and project manager progressing to the director level at a software development firm in Ann Arbor. She is currently employed by the Ross Business School of The University of Michigan at the Executive Education Center as program manager team lead.
Mrs. Peoples believes deeply that the community must commit to collectively addressing the problems facing its children. She has spent her adult life advocating for the well-being of children. It is her belief that the African-American community must embrace its children and marshal all of its resources to address their challenges that impede their successful development.
Mrs. Peoples is a member of Triumph Church, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and Ann Arbor Links. She served on the Board of SOS Community Services and the Board of Trustees of Jack and Jill of America Foundation for 10 years. During her leisure time, she enjoys reading on a wide variety of subjects, following football and basketball and spending time with her family in Ypsilanti.
